U.S. flag missile battery, Calhoun, Ill., July 13, 2009.

Going back home, to the first one, in Galva, Illinois, brought back a flood of good memories. The Fourth of July was always the best time of the year growing up. It was the apex of our calendar year, the halfway point of summer in a small town. Experiencing it as an adult now, as someone living elsewhere, provided a different lens to view the place through, to take notice of the changes in the people and landscape while recognizing scenes from my youth being played out around me. I
