An editor from the Wall Street Journal called and asked me if I knew of a brush clearing goat rental service in the area.  We both shared a laugh after I asked, “which one exactly?”  By my count there are at least three goat rental business in the Raleigh-Durham area – a testament to the growing interest in sustainable practices for lawn and property maintenance.

The intriguing story, written by Gwendolyn Bounds, looks at the growing goat clearing trend and profiles Rent-A-Goat out of Chapel Hill, owned and managed by Matthew Richmond. A 22-year-old business entrepreneur, Richmond, seeks out livestock owners via Craigslist and then contracts their services for environmentally conscious home owners in the upper-class neighborhoods around the area.  There are still a few kinks to work out with temporary fencing and poop, but plenty enough business to keep the goats full.
