YahZarah, Whiskey, Durham, July 25, 2010
For this week’s issue, the INDY featured local recording artist YahZarah on the cusp of releasing her third album – a collaboration with The Foreign Exchange, the most excellent grown-up soul duo of Phonte Coleman (formerly of Little Brother) and Nicolay Rook. From the moment she walked into the Whiskey, YahZahra was a natural breeze to work with. Her remarkable fashion sense and expressive personality went a long way in creating an easy shoot the day after my own late-night birthday party. Big, big thanks to Jeff Johnson, bartender at Whiskey, for opening up early, on a Sunday no less. YahZarah’s record is an enjoyable listen and the story of it’s creation is a great read. Here’s one of my favorite photos from the shoot that didn’t make the cut in print and a slide show of a few more.
