The North Carolina state budget is under fierce debate at the moment. Hang around the legislative building long enough and you will see a wide assortment of people making their case for what should be excluded or included in the finished budget. Some are quietly relentless in their efforts to bend ears, others are more, well, theatrical. Usually budget debates present a visual representation challenge (think podium, sweaty politician), but the fine folks over at Together NC know how to at least have some fun with it.

Large media outlets prefer to be hand-fed images, talking points and photo-ops. Attending a presidential campaign rally in person can be a real education in the art of “camera-ready” stage craft. After a few years in the business I’ve learned that the best stuff happens in between, unscripted morsels of reality that happen quickly and reveal plenty about a scene in the American politics and the players involved. Here’s a look at some out-takes from a recent assignment at a rally/demonstration/action put on by the Back in Tyme Budget Players (drastic cuts in education would take North Carolina back in time).

Sometimes there’s something interesting at the periphery of an event. Six kids out of twenty had their phones out recording.

A horse and buggy are nice visuals, especially if you can put them in context of the place. An okay shot, but not quite.

The split-level perspective and visiting school children help make a nice moment. This was the image selected to run.

They overstayed their welcome and security had some words with them, possibly trying not to smile at the fake mustaches?
