Justin Cobb, La Grange, N.C. | For The Wall Street Journal
Five-year-old Justin Cobb recently recovered from an intense ear ache without the aid of antibiotics on the recommendation of his doctor, who was responding to an emerging trend in pediatric medicine that emphasizes caution when prescribing antibiotics to treat common afflictions. Some time later an enterprising reporter at the Wall Street Journal wanted to find a way to illustrate a story about pediatricians rethinking the effectiveness of antibiotics, then, somehow heard about Justin. Now the reporter needs a photo to go with his story, so a conversation with an editor takes place and my cell phone rings. Soon I’m off to see about Justin and his mom, Latonia, some 95 miles down Hwy. 70 and a right turn off onto Promise Land Rd.
The evolution of an assignment has always carried a degree of magic for me, especially when it travels such distances. This marks my 100th post on this blog, five years into my professional career and it’s good to know that I’m still enchanted by the craft an eager to keep expanding on ideas and learning new techniques. There is stress; from tedious website updates (of which I’m currently enduring), from taxes and from worry about the next time the phone will ring, but this is truly a remarkable way of life and I’m grateful to be engaged and challenged by it every day. Thanks to all those who’ve supported and encouraged me along the way.
